Role synopsis
 
The Drilling Engineer is responsible for leading and integrating drilling engineering activities across multiple work fronts during well planning and execution. The role requires comprehensive engineering design, program preparation, equipment readiness and operations support. Successful delivery of offshore wells drilled on time and within budget while continuously seeking areas of performance improvement and process optimisation in alignment with company practice and policy.
 
Key accountabilities
 
Engineering & Operations Delivery
- Perform detailed well design engineering activities to optimise performance and deliver maximum long term value.
- Write a detailed well drilling operations program including contingency plans.
- Optimize well design and bottom hole location in line with cost, functionality and safety metrics.
- Evaluate and propose alternative well designs and drilling technologies.
- Produce AFE for the well, including detailed time and cost estimations.
- Propose and manage technical studies necessary for successful well delivery. - Investigate best practices/learning and incorporate into design and operational procedures.
- Work with drilling suppliers, including inspection companies, for equipment and personnel requirements execution.
- Identify/order key long lead items.
- Develop equipment load out lists.
- Schedule the procurement requirements for drilling operations.
- Provide rig operational support during execution phase.
- Complete end of well reports and capture post well lessons learned.
HSE / Integrity Management
- Identify risk and develop risk mitigation plan.
- Ensure HSE and drilling policies are incorporated into well designs, drilling operations and drilling services.
- Utilise safety management systems to maintain a high level of safety awareness.
- Demonstrate personal HSE leadership.
- Attend appropriate HSE training and work safety inputs and actions with team members.
- Ensure dispensations are in place for deviations from policy.
Standards & Processes
- Prepare engineering dispensations.
- Maintain validity of engineering basis of design documents.
- Ensure technical file notes are in place and documented for key designs and decisions.
- Attend morning rig calls and support any operation meetings related to drilling operations.
- Review lessons learned related to drilling activities.
- Coordinate QA/QC work performed by service companies.
- Perform and document comprehensive risk assessment for operations.
- Capture all pertinent performance data for reporting.
Technology
- Implement best technology into well design.
- Investigate new technologies and ideas to optimize wells performance.
People
- Maintain good teamwork attitude for a safe and optimised delivery.
- Assist in the development of drilling engineering staff.
- Share knowledge and best practices with other teams.
Supplier Relationships
- Prepare master equipment load out lists and manage 3rd party services/suppliers.
- Interface with Service Companies to define and optimize well design.
 
Essential Education
 
- A degree in engineering or mathematics.
 
Essential experience and job requirements
 
- Azerbaijani citizenship.
- Proficiency in English language.
- Minimum of three years of direct drilling engineering experience with an upstream operating oil company.
 
Other essential skills and knowledge
 
- Technical and operational skills to deliver planning and execution of the drilling activities.
- Demonstrable knowledge in risk weighed cost estimating, cost management, contract management, hydraulics, torque, drag and casing wear prediction & modelling, casing design, mud system analysis, bit optimisation, directional/BHA planning, drilling fluids and cementing, developing well operation programs, hole section guidelines, recommended practices, technical limit implementation and post analysis of operations.
- Knowledge of risk management, transfer and application of best practices.
 
Desirable criteria & qualifications
 
- Demonstrable capabilities of leading, developing, training and coaching less experienced drilling engineers.
- Knowledgeable of technical assurance - technical supplier performance management.
- Demonstrable leadership of safety programs for drilling operations and participate fully in developing HSSE culture.
- Certificate in IWCF Well Control (Subsea) Supervisory Level.

The Petroleum Engineers will work in the Base Management Teams reporting to the Base Management Team Leaders (BMTL). The PE positions are expected to provide Petroleum Engineering input in all areas of Base Management for the wells they are responsible for. These positions will be working daily with several other departments, which include New Well Planning, Reservoir Management, Drilling and Completions, Operations, Supply Chain Management, HSE, and partners.

• Reservoir modelling and simulation using VIP and other tools in support history matching work
• Analysis of surveillance and other data, and incorporation into dynamic models, to support optimisation of new well locations
• Lead the process of medium-long term production forecasting for the field
• Lead sector reviews – integrating all relevant data to support recommendations regarding well offtake and injection rates
• Evaluate individual well performance to support recommendations for changes in depletion strategy

Key accountabilities -Delivery and assure high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) electrical systems packages and equipment

Key accountabilities
 
• Design, installation and verification of Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS), Plant Logic Controller (PLC), Field instrumentations and Fire & Gas system
• Study of alarm rationalisation.
• Develop and maintain BP’s internal instrument and control Engineering Technical Practices (ETPs) and Site Technical Practices (STPs); Involvement with the development of industry standards and practices, e.g. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Engineering Equipment and Materials Users’ Association (EEMUA) and/or International Society of Automation (ISA), National Electrical Code (NEC), API.
• Analyse and optimise plant performance (including with advanced control and optimisation).
• Participate in Root Cause and Failure Analysis (RCFA); Participate or lead Control Hazard & Operability (CHAZOP).
